The US Navy Peacoat & Its History
The US Navy Peacoat is a classic piece of military wear. It's made waves (pun intended) in civilian circles too thanks to its incredible aesthetics, cozy warmth and fantastic utility. Its heavyweight 100% Kersey wool construction makes it one of the most weatherproof pieces of vintage military wear available. These coats also feature the iconic fouled anchor button design.
Wool coats like these have been used at sea for centuries. Invented by Dutch sailors and named "pije" coats for the type of wool used to produce them, the British Royal Navy took inspiration from Holland. This resulted in the English word "peacoat," an Anglicization of the Dutch. Both US and British sailors have worn peacoats since the 19th century.
AP's criteria for establishing age:
These coats are all of various vintages; we have done our best to estimate the age of these coats, basing our judgment on several factors as follows.
WW2: The consensus seems to be that after WW2, these jackets got a redesigned lapel, which reduced the number of buttons from eight to six. The throat latch for locking the collar up also seems to have been deleted. All jackets designated as "WW2" should have eight visible front buttons and a throat latch for the collar.
40s/50s: As stated above, certain features of the coats were removed post-war; any coats being sold as 40s or 50s should have six buttons visible at the front, but still come with labels indicating their placement in their relevant time period. Examples include the dual anchored "Naval Clothing Factory" tag, "Naval Clothing Depot" tag, "MFD. for Clothing Supply Office" tag, and the early contract "U.S Navy" tags.
60s: Tags vary on these pieces, but the certainty of their exact date would become solidified thanks to clarified contract numbers. This rule applies to all dates beyond this point. This era saw the eventual removal of a double row of stitching, three inches from the cuff.
Buying A WWII-Era US Navy Peacoat From AP
These peacoats are older than my grandparents. This means they'll have some signs of wear. Given their vintage, this is a rare opportunity to purchase a piece of US Navy history that is fashionable as well as practical.
We're very happy to bring these in at a price much lower than usual for coats of this age and condition. Typically, WWII-era Navy Peacoats bring between $300 and $600 on sites such as eBay, Etsy, Grailed or Poshmark. Faithfully made reproductions typically cost about the same. Grab an original from AP for half the cost!

Peacoats are meant to be a very trim fit, so these jackets have been measured from pit to pit, sorted by chest size. Please take the fitted cut of these coats into account, especially in relation to your own chest size and proportions. The following are the jacket's P2P measurements for each indicated size.
